Employment
1977-1993 (Current)
ICL Computers SA (LTD)
P.O. Box 784612
Sandton 2146
South Africa
I was employed by ICL, in 1977, as a computer engineer. I have, through the
years, worked myself up to the current position as a 2nd Line National Support
Consultant. My duties, in the last 4 years in this position, have been to
provide support to Field Engineers when they were unable to rectify a problem
at a customer site. This is achieved either by telephone or assisting the
Engineer on site. Problems could turn out to be computer hardware failures;
software corruptions; incorrect setting up of operating systems, networks or
packages; or environmental issues (static discharge, earth potential differences
on LANs, power dips/surges, faulty cabling, etc.). I also supply direct
consultation to customers experiencing difficulties with various software
packages. Another duty of mine, is to evaluate various OEM products'
intergration with ICL's hardware on different operating platforms, for ICL's
Sales/Marketing departments. It is required that I should keep up to the
latest development in the combat of computer viruses. I also had to set up
and maintain a data base on one of our Netware file servers, for field engineers
country-wide to log into and get the latest information on hardware
modifications, software updates and virus information. I have done numerous
in-house and external courses while with ICL, and also rely very much on
self development to keep up to date with the latest market trends. Further duties
included project management of major customer's LAN/WAN installations, and
training courses given to Field Engineers in various aspects of hardware,
software and operating systems. I am busy writing for my CNE certificate and
should complete the final examination during January 1994. Hopefully, I will be
able to complete my ECNE examinations 2 months later.
1974-1977
IBM SA (Pty) Ltd
Kruis Street
Johannesburg
I was employed by IBM as a Customer Service Engineer in it's Office Product
division. This involved in-house training on an ongoing basis on their various
office products. My duties were to look after the repairs and maintenance of
an area of about 450 machines. I left IBM when it decided to pull out of
South Africa due to political reasons.
1970-1974
SA Post and Telecommunications Dept.
Marshall Street
Johannesburg
After completing high school, I joined this company to further my studies
in the field of telecommunications. This entailed six months of college alter-
nating with six months of practical field work for a total of 3 years, after
which I qualified as a telecommunications technician. I was trained and got
experience in various fields of telecommunications, including automatic
telephone exchanges, 1st generation electronics and logic circuits.
